The Magic of Concerts in Care at Spencer House

There is just something about live music that changes the whole mood in a room. At Spencer House, we get to experience that magic thanks to Concerts in Care, a program that brings professional musicians to seniors and care facilities. In Halifax, it is run by the Health Arts Society of Atlantic Canada, and their goal is simple: bring the joy of music to people who might not be able to get out to concerts anymore.

This year alone, we have had five concerts right here at Spencer House, plus many more in past years. Every single one has been different and special. We have enjoyed everything from classic country, to smooth Spanish guitar, to female vocalist of the 60s, to old favourites that get everyone humming along. Sometimes the whole room joins in to sing, sometimes people get up and dance and other times everyone becomes completely silent while they listen (something that doesn’t happen very often in our centre). Many musicians have become familiar faces we love to welcome back, and others have popped in just once to give us an unforgettable treat.

Music is powerful and has many benefits for people at every age. It has a way of sparking memories, lifting moods, and creating connection. Hearing familiar songs can even boost memory and bring back happy feelings for older adults, especially those living with memory loss. I recall at one of our concerts watching a member with dementia go from staring at the floor, to breaking out into a giant smile and start to tap along when a musician played a song they knew. I’m so thankful for that moment as was everyone in the room who got to see a glimpse of joy in an old friend.

A big thank you must go to Peggy Walt, who organizes every visit. She knows our members so well and always chooses just the right performers for us. Peggy has truly become part of the Spencer House family, and her care shows in every concert she puts together.

We never know exactly what the next Concerts in Care performance will bring, but we do know it will be filled with smiles, connection, and beautiful music. During our last show, after singer/guitarist Larry Bjornson sang “I’ll be seeing you” a member shouted, “I hope that’s a promise”. Needless to say, we all look forward to the next concert.
